How to Build Strategic Visibility: Without Feeling Like Your Bragging

A hesitation I often hear is, "I don’t want to seem arrogant or self-promotional." And I get it; no one wants to be that person, constantly talking about their achievements at the cost of those around them.

But visibility isn’t about bragging - it’s about ensuring your work is recognised, valued, and included in the bigger picture. If you never put yourself in the frame when discussing your team’s successes, you’re doing yourself, and your leadership, a disservice.

So, how do you build authentic visibility without feeling like an ego-driven show pony?

1. Make Your Achievements Known - Without Feeling Like It's All Me, Me, Me

Visibility doesn’t mean standing on a soapbox. You don’t need to shout the loudest or dominate every conversation. But you do need to make sure your contributions are visible.

Here’s how to do it in a way that feels natural, not forced:

✔ Frame your achievements in terms of team success — and put yourself in the picture, too.
"Our project led to a 20% efficiency increase, and I’m proud to have led the strategy behind it."

✔ Highlight insights and impact, not just effort.
"One of the key things I learned from this challenge was..."

✔ Keep decision-makers informed, not just when things go wrong, but when they go right.

Not sure how to do this without sounding full of yourself? Try this:

👉 To your boss: "I wanted to share an update—our new approach to X has already improved Y by Z%. Excited to see how we can build on this."

👉 To a senior leader: "I know you’re focused on [big-picture goal]. We’ve been working on [initiative], and I’d love to share some insights. It’s had a real impact on [key metric]."

👉 In a leadership meeting: "One of the key challenges we tackled in this project was [problem]. I led the team in [strategy], and it’s been a game-changer in how we [solution]."

These are conversational, strategic, and to the point — not self-congratulatory.

2. Build Internal and External Networks

Visibility isn’t just about what you say, it’s about who knows your work. Strong leaders don’t just focus on their direct reports; they actively build relationships across their organisation and industry.

✔ Connect with key decision-makers. Don’t assume they know your work, ensure they do.
📍 Example: If you’ve had a big win, share it with leaders who would benefit from knowing. "I thought you’d be interested to hear about the impact of [initiative]—it’s been a great shift for [key business goal]."

✔ Position yourself as a respected voice in your field.
📍 Example: Speak at events, contribute to panels, or write about your insights. Your personal brand isn’t just built inside your company. It’s built in your industry and professional circles, too.

✔ Seek out mentors and sponsors — people who will advocate for you in rooms you’re not in.
📍 Example: "I really admire the way you’ve built your leadership career—would you be open to a coffee chat? I’d love to hear your insights on navigating [challenge]."

If the right people don’t know about your impact, your opportunities will always be limited.

3. Speak Up in Meetings and Leadership Conversations

Your expertise is valuable — but only if people hear it. If you find yourself holding back or getting drowned out in meetings, ask yourself:

✔ Am I contributing my insights, or am I waiting for permission?
📍 Example: Instead of waiting to be asked, say: "I’d like to add something here. One thing we might consider is…"

✔ Do I challenge ideas and offer solutions, or do I defer to others?
📍 Example: Instead of saying "I agree," try: "I see it slightly differently—what if we looked at it this way?"

✔ Am I known as someone who brings valuable perspectives to the table?
📍 Example: If not, start shaping your brand by sharing insights in meetings, contributing to industry discussions, or mentoring others.

💡 Tip: Speak early in meetings, especially in rooms dominated by louder voices. Visibility isn’t just about talking more; it’s about owning your space and making sure your voice carries weight.

Making Your Expertise Known - Without the Icky Feeling

Still uncomfortable with self-promotion? Reframing can be a game-changer.

Reframing helps you approach visibility in a way that aligns with your leadership style and values. Instead of seeing it as self-promotion, think of it as ensuring your contributions are recognised where they matter most.

For example:
🔹 Visibility isn’t about seeking attention — it’s about making sure your work is factored into key decisions.
🔹 Speaking up isn’t about taking up space — it’s about adding value to the conversation.
🔹 Sharing your achievements isn’t self-indulgent — it’s reinforcing the impact of your leadership.

You don’t have to change who you are to be visible, you just need to make sure the right people see your expertise.

🔹 You’re ensuring your impact is seen.
🔹 You’re making your leadership visible.
🔹 You’re positioning yourself for the recognition you deserve.

Your expertise deserves to be recognised. And if you don’t take charge of your visibility, someone else will control the narrative for you.

Your expertise deserves to be recognised, but are you in control of the message? In Your Personal Brand Speaks Before You Do - Is It Saying What You Want it To?, we dive into how your brand shapes opportunities and why actively managing it is key to your leadership success. Keep reading!
